A baby quilt for a client

Today I thought that I would talk about the baby quilt that I have been working on for a client.

I have done a few quilts like this one, but the centres are always different. I also would like to share with you were I have been getting the centre block patterns. I have a really great book and I have used this book a few time for baby quilts. The book is called Quilts, bibs, blankies..... oh my! by Kim Schaefer. Published by C&T Publishing. Just a really great book for the applique and for Ideas.

I will try to take you through the prossess of making a quilt for a client.

The first thing that I do after the client calls me is put together some ideas before our appointment. I keep this really simple, because most client have a really hard time making choices. ( I am talking about clients that do not sew).  At the appointment with them we go over the ideas that I have put together, and I get a better feel of what they are wanting. We choose fabrics and I give them a price, this may take about two to three hours.

For these consignment quilts I always pull the fabrics from my stash. Pricing can be difficalt if you are pulling from your stash. So what I do is work off of todays pricing on fabric and then measure the piece that I will use. Figure out what a fat 1/4 will cost and then also a fat 1/8 and work pricing that way. Ex: if the piece of fabric is close to the fat 1/4 then I price it as a fat 1/4 if the piece of fabric is closer to a fat 1/8 then I price it to that. ( hope that this makes sense). I will calulate for the borders  batting backing and binding. I will give the price for maturials, and then I will give a separate price for my labour.

This is what I will have after the client and I have narrowed our choices done

After the client has approved everything then I get started with the quilt. For the quilt that is shown here I have pinwheel blocks and one applique block I have two borders I get everything cut first. This quilt was designed with my accuquilt studio cutter in mind. Cutting with the studio cutter saves me a lot of time. So I get every thing cut out and the applique block ready to go. After this I will work on the applique block when I am out at my stitching groups and I will take an afternoon to work on sewing up the pinwheel blocks. When the applique block is finished I will take another afternoon to put the top together.

fabrics all cut out.

The applique block with all the pinwheels sewn together. Love my Lion.

Here it is with the borders on. I have longated the quilt top by putting at the top and bottom a row of 3 by 6 inch rectangles before I put the borders on.
Now this quilt is ready to go into the machine to be quilted. This is the time that I will get in touch with the client to remind her that I need to know what she would like on the label.

All finished Quilted and Binded.

Once I get to this point I am working with the client to get the label made. This may take a few emails back and forth.

I have made a few other quilts like this one for other clients. Have a look.

The black sheep,

The tiger,

and this is a mouse.
( this quilt I did not use the said book above to make the mouse.)

I just got a call for another baby quilt to be made will be starting that one soon. Color will be grays and yellows. Center block is going to be a giraffe, and the block around it will be log cabin. I will take lots of pictures so that I may share with you.

All the work I have been busy with

I have been quiet last week, I will tell you why. My lovely husband was out of town last week. Before he left he did some changes to the computer, and for got to give me access to my pictures. So I was out of luck till he got home. I have been very busy with work and finished off a quilt and some tops. I will post today some eye candy of the quilt that I worked on. This is a quilt that was made by my good friend Jocelyne Yeon. She does beautiful work.

Here you can see what I did as my back ground fill. I hope in the near future I will be able do some video covering stippling and background fills.

I used a straight edge ruler and a ruler by Kimmy Brunner Called the Melon shape I have all three sizes and you can find them on her web site.

In this block I used a ruler template made by Quilter's rule, called Ronda's Mini Arc.

There are other sizes. I really liked using it. I will be working with it again soon.

In this block I also used an other ruler that helped me do the swirly feathers in the corner of the blocks. You use this ruler to make your spine.

This is what the rulers look like

You buy them like this and you can get them again at quilter's rule. I enjoy using them.

Well I hope that you liked the eye candy.

Happy Quilting.

The tear drop feathers

This is going to be a small post today, and it is also the last of the feather videos. I am going to go back into the studio, and start taping again the next series of videos. I was thinking that I will cover some background fillers. I will let you know how that is coming along.

On with this post. The tear drop feathers. This is in my mind the easiest to do there is no back tracking with these at all. and you can really make them fit any shape. Have a look

I stitched out these tear drops feathers in a traingle. I did this so that you can see how easy it is to fill a space any shape of space with feathers. You can do this with any of the feathers that I have been covering this last month.

Well this is the end of the feather tutorial. I hope that you have enjoyed them as much as I have enjoyed putting them together.

Happy Quilting.
